Chapter Number3
Narrative Chapter Number4
TitleInto the Depths
Primary Location142-hesh-caves
Dm NotesThis is the primary dungeon chapter. The ghost miners are a tone piece β€” they are tragic, not evil. The warning 'You cannot kill her with simple weapons' foreshadows the need for magic weapons or the collapse mechanism to deal with Lezmara. The twin lever statues are the intended solution for the final confrontation. Harfur (druid/nature focus on mushrooms) will have strong interest in the mushroom garden β€” lean into his character. Raz should be played for comedy but with a hint of pathos β€” he doesn't know what he is, just what he doesn't want. The prisoner's hidden journals are the core intelligence delivery system for this dungeon.
Detailed NarrativeThe pathway into the caves is unusually clean β€” swept or dragged feet. The cave descends deeper, walls transitioning from rough-hewn to ancient Hesh stonework. Torches flicker from an invisible wind; witchlight flickers ahead. Key areas encountered: (1) Entrance β€” a half-alive Hesh guardian statue, frozen half in stone and half in the plane of death. His magic armor and hammer also flicker. He says 'You should not be here' and warns the dead will not like their presence, as they will remind the ghosts of what they've lost. He explains he gave his life to protect the entrance from the plane of death, trapping himself between planes. (2) Mining cart tracks repaired recently β€” signs of active re-excavation. (3) A hidden skeleton in ancient stone-shielded garb: Potion of Walk Through Stone, Mithral Chain +2, Dagger +1, 5 Potions of Cure Moderate Wounds, and the note 'Beware the Dark Lady. If you see her, run.' (4) A deep well with eerie moaning and tug on the rope β€” items drawn up (RoP +2, crossbow +2), 3 skeletons attack. (5) Main room: Hesh war masks, torn papers, ancient sleeping beds recently used, a ghost writing notes before vanishing through a wall. (6-8) Skeletal miners heard below; old sleeping quarters where ghost miners sleep in Hesh-era style. (9) A phantom banquet: phantom plates over dusty dishes and skeletal pigs; an iron chandelier; a dancing skeleton in the corner. (10) Mushroom garden with a warning in Draconic: 'You cannot kill her with simple weapons.' Plants include Halo Mushroom Toxin, Ghostblossom (+2 morale STR/CON for 1 min), Gravebane Petals, withered Portal Oak, and a dying Tree of Knowledge with 5 apples remaining. (11) A beheaded floats as a guard; glowing stones in the walls dim when removed (10 min duration); a note says 'Don't sleep.' A hidden journal entry mentions Lezmara's prisoner: 'I must do as Lezmara says... She tested me to see if I could chain the dragon up... I was successful... The twin statues are the key β€” if you pull both of their weapons down it will start a collapse of all of the Hesh areas, likely burying all the inhabitants. The levers must be pulled together.' (14) Circle room with a large statue, tile mosaic of legendary monsters, a scholar ghost and a nasty ghost. A magic mural allows teleportation. Scrolls include Fireball and Lightning Bolt. Hidden: Amulet of Natural Armor +2 and Boots of Speed. (15) Water wheel room: dwarven skeletons forging weapons; hundreds of swords stacked neatly; remains of a dwarf statue. (19) Twin statue room: spiral black stone floor; 'Death is the only exit' on the wall; 'The Twin' written behind the large statue in an obscure language (Linguistics DC 20). Earthmaw trap in the back room. The party also meets Raz: a self-aware fluke skeleton who says 'I am Raz... I like Jazz... I'm just on my way.' He explains he is a fluke β€” gained sentience through exposure to mushroom paste in the garden. He just wants to not go back to mining. He remembers a joke from his past life: 'something about a skeleton drinking... goes right through him.' Mushroom paste doesn't go through β€” he smears it into his bones to sustain himself. Niko invites Safa (the pregnant woman) to stay with him for more comfortable conditions.
SummaryThe party descends into the ancient Hesh cave complex beneath the Twisted Crown Peaks. The cave entrance is marked by a half-stone Hesh guardian statue trapped between the prime plane and the plane of death. Deeper inside: re-excavated mining cart tracks, ghost miners sleeping in their old quarters, a phantom banquet, a mushroom garden (containing Halo Mushroom Toxin, Ghostblossom, Gravebane Petals, withered Portal Oak, and a dying Tree of Knowledge), and multiple hidden journals left by a prisoner of Lezmara's β€” all pointing to the twin lever statues that will collapse the Hesh section and potentially bury Lezmara. The party meets Raz, a self-aware fluke skeleton ('I like Jazz') who gained sentience via mushroom paste and just wants to not go back to mining. Lezmara's prisoner left notes warning 'You cannot kill her with simple weapons' and explaining the twin statue collapse trigger.
